Mike Ashley appointed as a Charity Commission board member

Mike AshleyMike Ashley has been appointed Charity Commission board member with responsibility for chairing the Commission’s Audit and Risk Committee. Mike Ashley will be appointed for a 3-year term and will take up his post on 1 November 2014. Within England and Wales, the Charity Commission is responsible for: registering eligible organisations in England and Wales which are established for only charitable purposes; taking enforcement action when there is malpractice or misconduct; ensuring charities meet their legal requirements, including providing information on their activities each year; making appropriate information about each registered charity widely available and providing online services and guidance to help charities run as effectively as possible. The Charity Commission has 4 offices in Liverpool, London, Newport and Taunton, and employs 323 people.

Mike Ashley was formerly Head of Quality and Risk Management, KPMG Europe LLP and has more than 20 years’ experience as an audit partner for several large financial services groups (most recently HSBC Holdings and Standard Chartered PLC) and for the Bank of England. His other current appointments include: Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit Committee, Barclays; Vice Chair, European Financial Reporting Advisory Group’s Technical Expert Group; Non-Executive Director for Government Internal Audit Agency; Member, HM Treasury’s Audit Committee and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ Ethics Standards Committee.
