Keir Starmer appoints the most ethnic Shadow Cabinet ever!
Keir Starmer, the new Leader of the Labour Party, has today appointed his new Shadow Cabinet, the most female and ethnically led Shadow Cabinet in history. Among the Asians in the Shadow Cabinet are leadership rival Lisa Nandy who is appointed Shadow Foreign Secretary; Thangam Debbonaire, appointed Shadow Housing Secretary; Preet Kaur Gill, Shadow International Development Secretary; Rosena Allin-Khan, Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Valerie Vaz, Shadow Leader of the House.
Keir Starmer was elected Leader of the Labour Party and Angela Rayner was elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party with 56.2% and 52.6% of the vote respectively. In his acceptance speech, Sir Keir Starmer said, “It is the honour and the privilege of my life to be elected as leader of the Labour Party. It comes at a moment like none other in our lifetime. Coronavirus has brought normal life to a halt. Our cities, our towns and our villages are silent, our roads deserted. Public life has all but come to a standstill and we're missing each other."
“I’m proud to have appointed a Shadow Cabinet that showcases the breadth, depth and talents of the Labour Party," he said, "this is a new team that will be relentlessly focused on acting in the national interest to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and rebuilding Labour so that it can win the next election.”
