Deloitte Multicultural Network discusses the portrayal of BAME in the mediaThe Deloitte Multicultural Network (MCN) hosted a special event to discuss the portrayal of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals in the British media on Thursday 20th November 2014 at its London offices. Speakers included lawyer Cordella Bart-Stewart; columnist and diary editor for the Guardian newspaper, Hugh Muir; the Chair of the Broadcasting Equality Commission, Simon Albury and human resources strategist Val Stevenson. Guests, drawn from a wide range of media platforms and departments within Deloitte UK, engaged in a discussion around how BAME portrayal in the media influences perception and representation in other industries including professional services, politics, law and the arts; the means by which negative impact of portrayal can be overcome to develop a more representative talent pool and lessons that can be learnt from other organisations. Val Stevenson spoke about the impact of unconscious bias in everyday management practices and some of the current thinking on diversity and inclusive leadership. The Deloitte MCN is mechanism for the company to open a wider platform for dialogue with a broad range of clients and experts in different industry sectors.
