Appointment of members of the Legal Services Board
The Lord Chancellor, in consultation with the Lord Chief Justice, today (7th March 2013) announced the appointment of Anneliese Day QC and Terence Babbs as members of the Legal Services Board (LSB). These appointments, as members of the Board, are for three years from 1 April 2013. Members receive non-pensionable remuneration of £15,000 per annum for a commitment of at least 30 days a year. The LSB is funded by an annual levy upon the legal profession. These are subject to completion of clearance checks. The LSB comprises a Chairman and seven members. The Board is supported by the Chief Executive and about 30 members of staff.
The LSB is the oversight regulator for legal services in England and Wales. It was set up in 2008 following enactment of the Legal Services Act in 2007 and took on the majority of its statutory powers on 1 January 2010. It is independent of Government and of the legal profession, and oversees the bodies that regulate approximately 147,000 legal professionals. The LSB also oversees the Office for Legal Complaints (OLC), and its administration of the Legal Ombudsman scheme that resolves complaints about lawyers.
