The Women’s Equality Party (WEP), which today announced its first set of policies to fulfil its remit of bringing about equality for women, hosted a fundraiser on 20th October 2015 to help it achieve its aims. It plans to field candidates for the Greater London Assembly elections, Wales Assembly and Scottish Parliament and possibly the London Mayoral election in 2016 although leader Sophie Walker said that the £20,000 cost for the latter was a huge barrier for the recently launched part which is funded entirely by donations from its 45,000 members.

She added, “it is just six months since Catherine Mayer and Sandi Toksvig had the idea for a Women’s Equality Party to transform the life chances of women in our country and so build a better society for all.” The Women’s Equality Party is a focussed mainstream party whose policies are designed to further the six core objectives of;

  • pushing for equal representation in politics, business, industry and throughout working life.
  • equal pay and equal opportunity to thrive.
  • campaigning for equal parenting and caregiving and shared responsibilities at home to give everyone equal opportunities both in family life and the workplace.
  • encouraging an education system that creates opportunities for all children and an understanding of why this matters.
  • striving for equal treatment of women by and in the media.
  • seeking and end to violence against women.

The fundraiser, held at Mary Ward House in Bloomsbury, held a silent auction with prizes donated by entrepreneur Jo Fairley, food writer Jack Monroe comedian Kathy Lette, author Bridget Christie and historian Dan Snow, among others. The top lot was a dinner at The Ivy and quiz for 5, donated by party co-founder Sandi Toksvig, which raised £2500. “We’re making this party into a proper electoral threat,” stated Sandi Toksvig at the fundraising party.
